Verna Jacobs was born June 21, 1939, to her parents Lucy Mae Roberts (Kelly) and JL Lowe in San Augustine, TX. She is affectionately known as Verna Dean a “bad mamma jamma!” She was classy yet fun. She was soft-spoken yet confident. She was frugal yet expensive. Her smile was warm and infectious. She did a lot of work with her bare hands. She baked, quilted, sewed, and made jewelry.
She grew up in the care of her grandparents Wiley and Lillian Roberts and graduated from Lincoln Colored High School in 1957 in San Augustine, TX. She accepted Christ at a young age and became a member of the Roberts Baptist Church where she was baptized. After graduating, she moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico where she raised her children and married her former husband Dan Washington in 1958. They were members of Corinth Baptist Church where she served on the usher board.
Verna moved to California in 1979. She graduated from Los Angeles Trade Tech in 1984 and became the Office Manager for OSI Systems, Inc. in Torrance, CA. She was a trusted employee for several years until she retired. After retiring, she relocated to Albuquerque with her late husband John Jacobs and became a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and later joined New Life Baptist church. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend.
She was proceeded in death by her husband: John Jacobs, mother: Lucy Mae Kelly, father: J. L. Lowe Sr., stepfather: Horace Kelly, brothers: Bobby Kelly, Joe Kelly Sr., Horace Kelly Jr., Archie Kelly, Odell Kelly, Bobby Lee Kelly, Edward Kelly, Curtis Garrett, J. L. Lowe Jr. and Lonnell Lowe, sister: Edna Hicks.
Left to cherish her memories are her former husband Dan Washington, daughters: Patricia Washington-Bonner, Sandra Washington-Nelson. Granddaughters: Vanisha Blake, Shonda Blake, two grandsons and two great-grandchildren, sisters: Ruby Clark-Lowe, Johnnie Faye Presto (Larry), Glenda Taylor (Jerry), Ronda Patton (Dewitt), Alice Kelly Woods, Linda Smith (Gary), Lillie Stubberfield (Brett), brothers: James Mitchel Lowe (Debra), James Edward Lowe, Jerry Lowe (Redia) and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
