Obituary – Prentis L. Jones

Prentis Leon Jones was born to Florence Nell Jones and Woodrow Jones Sr. on September 6, 1945, in McKenzie, Tennessee.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father, two brothers (Woodrow Jr. and Ernest), and wife (Mary Jones).

After attending Clearfield High School in Utah, the family moved to Albuquerque, where he attended and graduated from the University of New Mexico with his Bachelors in Physical Education and Science in 1970. He moved from Albuquerque to Gallup, New Mexico where he met and married Mary Kirk in 1971.

They then moved to Albuquerque in 1972 where he found his passion for Physical Education, Cross Country, and Track and Field.  In 1986, he transferred to Jackson Middle School to teach Science and Physical Education while also holding roles as head coach for Rio Grande High School’s Cross Country and Track team and driving instructor for McGinnis School of Driving. He retired from Jackson in 2015, but continued coaching at Rio Grande and instructing for McGinnis.

Prentis was baptized and committed his life to the Lord in McKenzie, Tennessee.  He continued his faithful service as church usher with Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Albuquerque.

A devoted father, passionate about self-improvement and education; he supported his children in their academic and personal endeavors. He valued spending quality time with his family, friends, and held closely the memory of all of his previous students and athletes.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Josephine Brooks; three children: Lenell Walton, Francine Jones, and Quentin Jones; two step daughters: Sharonnda Brooks and Brooke Brooks; one step son: JoJo Brooks, several grandsons and granddaughters; two great granddaughters and one great grandson.

Dad, thank you for being a wonderful father.  We love you dearly…
