Joan Chavez

Joan Chavez, age 76, passed away on September 16, 2015.  She was born in Texline, TX to Frank and Velda Coulson on June 22, 1939. She married Sonny Chavez in Albuquerque, and together they raised their children, David, Claudette, Dennis, and Timmy. She was a matriarch in the family livestock business with Sonny, and later with Dennis. Joan was well-known throughout the southwest by everyone in the horse and cattle business, and well respected by her colleagues.  She had a generous heart and always made herself available to help family, friends, and even strangers in their time of need. Most importantly, she loved her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, JW Coulson and Jimmie Ray Coulson; husband, Sonny, son Timmy and daughter Claudette Abeita. She is survived by her sons David, Dennis and wife Tamara; Grandchildren Eddie, Amanda, Claudio (Sara), Juan, Andres, Brittany, Bryce, and Dalton; great-grandchildren Shaylee, Dylan, Claudette, Isabella, Brooklyn, Bryana, and Aurelia; Sisters Sue Philips, Donna Stromei, and Judy Martin-Hurn (Steve); numerous nieces and nephews, to include special niece Shannon Stromei. The family is truly appreciative of the compassionate staff at Brookdale Assisted Living, and offers a special heartfelt thanks to Dr. Tamara Goodman and Hospice of New Mexico - they are absolute angels. Viewing and Visitation for Joan will be held on Tuesday. September 22 from 9:00 AM until the beginning of the Funeral Service at 10:00 AM at the Chapel of Angels at Garcia Mortuary, 717 Stover Ave SW, Albuquerque with Pastor Boyd Morerod of the First Baptist Church of Los Chavez, officiant. Interment at Fairview Memorial Park will follow immediately after the service.  At Joan’s request, her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
